Stay Informed: CyberSecurity Alerts for Lawyers

Federal Bureau of Investigation CyberSecurityIn my last blog post, I reported on recent developments regarding a concerted attack on major law firms by cybercriminals trying to hack insider information. In that post I mentioned that the FBI had recently issued a “Private Industry Notification” alert about this threat, directed at law firms.

Earlier this week that same alert landed in my email in-box, by way of a new initiative from the Amercian Bar Association—undertaken at the request of the FBI—to publish such alerts to all its members. I thought that was a great idea, so I wanted to share it here on the blog. Even if you’re not a member of the ABA, you can still subscribe to the alerts on its web site: Subscribe to FBI CyberAlerts.

I recommend that all lawyers stay informed about these alerts and the cybersecurity threats that prompt them. In fact, I believe our ethical duties obligate us to take this reasonable step, which will ebable us to better protect the confidential and private information of our clients.

And while we’re on the subject of the FBI alerts, I thought it would be handy to reproduce the latest one here in its entirety:

Finally, I urge lawyers to take advantage of the helpful resources provided by the ABA through its Cyberecurity Legal Task Force. Data security and privacy issues are becoming more critical to every lawyer’s practice, and with the many resources available to us, we have no excuses for not staying educated and informed.
